Black Activists Clash With Liberal Crowd
When Black Lives Matter protesters stormed the stage where he was speaking Saturday, uber-liberal Democratic presidential candidate and avowed socialist Bernie Sanders got a good look at what happens when his own progressive agenda is taken to extremes.
About 19,000 people cheered Sanders in the arena that is home to the NBA’s Portland Trail Blazers.
Earlier that day, Sanders’s first stop of the day had abruptly ground to a halt.
Sanders also issued a statement on his website about the Black Lives Matter controversy. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., stands nearby as the two women take over the microphone at a rally on August. 8, 2015, in downtown Seattle.
“We want an opportunity on the mic”, one activist, a co-founder of Seattle’s Black Lives Matter movement, said.
“Event organizers allowed the period of silence, as some in the large crowd booed and shouted for the protesters to leave the stage. No candidate for president is going to fight harder for criminal justice reform and racial justice issues than Senator Bernie Sanders“.
Sunday marks the one year anniversary of Brown’s death, which helped launch the Black Lives Matter movement and a national conversation to address police brutality.
Following the Medicare and Social Security event, Sanders spoke in front of a packed crowd in Seattle, with a 12,000 maximum capacity audience at the Hec Edmunson Pavillion, where the Washington Huskies play basketball. They took control, and an event organizer told the crowd they would be allowed to speak before Sanders, the Hill reported.
Marissa Johnson, left, speaks as Mara Jacqueline Willaford holds her fist overhead and Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Both the senator and his fellow Democratic presidential hopeful Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley were interrupted by Black Lives Matters protesters at a Netroots Nation event in Phoenix last month. At Sanders’ first rally, where he was scheduled to talk about Social Security, about a dozen Black Lives Matter protesters hopped on the stage at the same time he did. Sanders said 20,000 people squeezed into the center to hear the Vermont Independent speak.
“The problem with Sanders’, and with white Seattle progressives in general, is that they are utterly and totally useless (when not outright harmful) in terms of the fight for Black lives”.
