Canada wins gold over United States in wild Pan Am Games final
Much like numerous other big events in Toronto this past week at the 2015 Pan American Games, the women’s basketball competition comes down to the United States and Canada for the gold medal.
Global baseball’s weird extra-innings rules and an even more weird series of errors worked in Team Canada’s favour as they won gold for the second consecutive Games, earning a walkoff 7-6 victory over the USA on Sunday.
The Pan American Games men’s baseball tournament had a finish on Sunday night many had never before seen.
Cochrane also won the 400-metre freestyle on Friday.
If that becomes official, Canada’s Alec Page would move up from fourth to be awarded the bronze medal and his teammate Zach Chetrat would be elevated from bronze to silver.
In the bottom of the 10th inning, with the Americans having taken a 6-4 lead, Canada scored three to win in the July 19 game at the President’s Choice Ajax Pan Am Ballpark.
Amanda Sobhy brought home two gold medals from the Pan American Games in Toronto this week.
Three U.S. golds came in canoe slalom, with Casey Eichfeld claiming two of them, before Marilyn Little secured individual and team honours in three day eventing, leading the team to Rio 2016 Olympic qualification. “This means a lot to us and to be able to play in the gold medal game is something that we had circled on our calendar months ago and now we get that opportunity”. One additional country was added to the table after tonight’s racing, however, as Chile saw its first swimming medal of these Games with Kristel Köbrich snagging the women’s 800m freestyle silver.
“We’re gonna go back to work for the world championships”. Miranda Ayim had eight while Kia Nurse finished with seven.
The men’s team pursuit squad of Calgary’s Eric Johnstone, Hamilton’s Sean MacKinnon, Remi Pelletier of Longueuil, Que., and Edward Veal of Queensville, Ont., beat Venezuela to win bronze, while Hugo Barrette of Cap-aux-Meules, Que., captured another bronze in men’s keirin.
Nirra Fields added 12 for the Canadians, who went a ideal 3-0 through the preliminary round.
Evans won her heat in 4min 15.51sec and swam exactly one second faster in the final but after showing among the leaders early on was overhauled halfway through the race.
The Canadian women’s baseball team will try to match the men’s feat when their tournament begins Monday. Its 719-member delegation is twice as large as the team that competed at the Pan Am Games four years ago in Guadalajara, Mexico, and it has delivered the goods.
