Canadian Emily Overholt wins Pan Am gold in 400-metre freestyle
North Battleford’s Andrew Albers won a Pan Am Games gold medal with Canada’s baseball team Sunday in Toronto.
Elsewhere, Peru’s Gladys Tejeda won the gold medal in the women’s marathon Saturday morning.
In that game Canada scored two runs in the sixth and held off for a surprising 2-1 win and its first baseball gold medal.
Ryan Cochrane cruised to gold in the men’s 400 freestyle by a margin of over a second.
Canada has taken over the track bicycling incidents, triumphing 4 gold, a precious metal and head.
After pitching two scoreless innings, Albers gave up two runs in the top of the 10th as the United States took a 6-4 lead.
The gold-medal game between the United States and Canada will be streamed live online on ESPN3, with coverage beginning at 8:30 p.m. ET. “To come here and actually swim a decent time, I think was what our goal was”, said Cochrane. “It ranks up there with winning an Olympic medal because winning at home and the “Go Canada” chants, you don’t find that everywhere”. Brazil finished with 26 medals and 10 gold.
“Incredible, it’s an wonderful feeling, our game tonight was fantastic, we played great on all cylinders, everybody on the team contributed”, said Kia Nurse of Hamilton. The Canadian sprint crew continued their impressive performances, Jasmin Glaesser remained in the medal hunt in the women’s omnium and despite some miscommunication, the men’s pursuit squad still had a shot at a medal, too.
Evans won her heat in 4min 15.51sec and swam exactly one second faster in the final but after showing among the leaders early on was overhauled halfway through the race.
Earlier, Lee Parkhill of Oakville, Ont., won bronze in the men’s laser sailing, finishing the race with 12 points.
The semifinals are Sunday, and the medal games are scheduled for Monday before the men’s tournament gets underway Tuesday.
With runners already on first and second base due to the worldwide tie breaker rules in place for these Games, one Canadian runner made it home before USA replacement pitcher David Huff audaciously attempted to pick off Pete Orr at first base, only to throw wildly into the outfield.
The Canadians are competing in memory of longtime coach Randy Bennett, who oversaw the national team at every global competition after 2009, including the 2012 Olympics.
Sydney Pickrem was the other individual victor from Canada’s team, clinching bronze in the women’s 200m IM event.
“I had a really successful meet, I did exactly what I was set-up to do on my path next year to the Olympic Games”, said Coughlin.
