Chinese President Xi Jinping Calls for Equitable Development
The global meeting is focused on fixing some of the world’s greatest problems through a 15-year road map.
President Rouhani addressed the Summit on Saturday in New York where he said that the JCPOA prepared the grounds for regional cooperation. As part of this, every Pacific nation has signed up to the Global Goals, agreeing on our collective priorities for the next 15 years.
United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon set the stage, saying the agenda “embodies the aspirations of people everywhere for lives of peace, security and dignity on a healthy planet”.
The Summit opened with a full program of events, including a screening of the film The Earth From Space, performances by United Nations Goodwill Ambassadors Shakira and Angelique Kidjo, as well as call to action by female education advocate and the youngest-ever Nobel Laureate, Malala Yousafzai along with youth representatives as torch bearers to a sustainable future. Fifteen years ago, the world’s leaders agreed to pursue the Millennium Development Goals, global targets set in the year 2000, which galvanised unprecedented efforts to meet the needs of the world’s poorest.
“Terrorist groups undermine “sustainable development goals;’ the current situation if continued, will bring more destruction of natural resources”.
According to a final United Nations report on the MDGs, though the ambitious goals are not fully met, the world has attained a major achievement of reducing the number of people living in extreme poverty -those who lived on less than 1.25 USA dollars a day – by half.
Critics say they are too broad, lack accountability and will lead to disenchantment among those in the world most in need. Without safe water and sanitation, people remain trapped in an endless cycle of poverty. And too many die.
“I, therefore, call on all stakeholders to continue to partner with government at all levels towards achieving the new development goals in this era of Change”.
Looking back. Goal setting works. It includes German Chancellor Angela Merkel, the presidents of Brazil, Colombia, Liberia, South Africa, Tanzania and Tunisia and the prime ministers of Sweden and East Timor.
Business leaders also heard from the President of the 70th session of the General Assembly on how the new goals need to be communicated to professional communities worldwide.
The Chinese president said different countries should shoulder common yet differentiated responsibilities.
Egypt has been fighting an insurgency by Sinai militants allied to the Islamic State group. Hundreds of Islamists have been killed and thousands arrested. We will do that through partnership and through commitment. “It is rooted in gender equality and respect for the rights of all”.
