Civil Rights Activist Cornel West Throws Support Behind Bernie Sanders
“Can you reach African-American voters?”
A new poll shows residents don’t care for either Hillary Clinton, Donald Trump, or Jeb Bush.
Only hours after delivering a stem-winder speech in New Hampshire blasting income inequality created by economic policies that help the rich get richer while the poor stay poor, Democratic presidential contender Sen Bernie Sanders (I) ripped into “unfettered free trade” that is devastating workers.
Sanders drew big crowds in South Carolina, although not as large as the ones that attended his recent rallies on the West Coast.
Sen. Bernie Sanders is the new Democratic front-runner – at least in New Hampshire.
That reflects a Franklin Pierce University/Boston Globe poll conducted earlier in the month where Sanders held the same lead in the Granite State.
“What the American people are entitled to is a serious debate on serious issues”. And more than twice as many Biden and Sanders supporters say Clinton is their second choice for the nomination than choose her other principle opponent.
The past week was full of reminders of her advantage here.
At the same time, Vice President Joe Biden is reportedly moving closer to a decision whether to challenge Clinton for the Democratic nomination because of her e-mail woes.
Singletary said some black voters have not forgotten the Clintons’ missteps here during her last presidential bid.
“I would do everything I can to make sure health care in America is a right and not a privilege”, said Sanders.
“She’s practical, she’s innovative, she’s progressive, and she gets things done”.
Meanwhile, Sanders is largely unknown here, especially among African-American voters. “The Sanders campaign is playing more for the primary than the general”. Shumlin, who may have been Sanders’ best hope for one, stressed he still holds his fellow Vermonter in high regard.
“Pretty much all we have to do is walk around with a clipboard that has a sign on it that says, ‘Talk to me if you support Hillary, ‘ and people will just come up to us“, she said.
Between campaign events here in South Carolina, Sanders met with groups of black leaders, including ministers and business owners and visited with Black Lives Matter activists after his rally. But Hart was in South Carolina because Sanders is a magnet for like-minded folk.
Howard Dean, the former chairman of the Democratic National Committee, said Clinton’s responses to the controversy had been too “lawyerly”. The other announced candidates have so far managed little support.
The Vermont senator said Super PACs play no role in his campaign and that the average contribution is $31.20.
Sanders also made stops in Columbia, Sumter and Greenville. It is not about Hillary Clinton. Asked if Clinton broke the law by using personal email while serving as secretary of state, 9 percent said she did, 76 percent said she did not, and 15 percent weren’t sure.
