Clone wars: First Lenovo, now Dell is working on a Surface competitor
Or something like that.
Obviously, this training led to no results, as the incident has happened again now that Microsoft’s getting ready to bring out the Surface Pro 4 and Apple has just presented what could be its most powerful rival – the iPad Pro.
German site Giga.de claimes to have discovered marketing materials that outlined the Dell XPS 12 and described a tablet with a 4K display, integrated kickstand and a detachable keyboard.
Of course, Dell’s 2-in-1 isn’t a total clone of the Surface Pro 3. The 12-inch screen, for example, boasts of a 3840×2160 4K resolution. The optional 3D camera is most likely an Intel RealSense camera. Furthermore, the device will have a Thunderbolt 3 connector instead of USB 3.0. Given that some details are still missing, not to mention this is all from an unofficial source, we’ll keep our fingers crossed. It is supposedly compatible with the Dell Active Stylus. What’s more, the tablet will have 10 hours of battery life.
Something else we might see come October 6 is an update to the Microsoft Band, the company’s first wearable of the modern era.
Equally interesting is the timing of Dell’s rumored XPS and Lenovo’s MIIX.
This means that Dell and HP will offer the Surface Pro 3 alongside their own products but will make money through support and warranty. Not a great start for the new custom-built Surface Pro 3, which was even produced with a new ruggedized design for the teams.
We know that the Surface Pro has become a popular choice when it comes to 2-in-1 hybrids. The Surface has always been a rather odd duck, existing both as a distinct and viable product and as a sort of reference design.
Microsoft has sent out media invites for an event it’s hosting on October 6 in New York City where it’ll share news regarding devices running Windows 10.
