Colorado movie theater shooter, James Holmes, sentenced to life in prison
He sat stony and silent in court as Samour read the verdict slips. Some cried, while others were angered Holmes escaped the death penalty, the New York Times reported. The same jury earlier rejected Holmes’ insanity defense, finding him capable of understanding right from wrong when he carried out the 2012 assault that injured 70. That automatically eliminates the death penalty for the failed neuroscientist, who blamed his calculated killings of 12 people on mental illness.
But finally they were unable to agree a sentence.
“She felt that life [in prison] was appropriate and she would not be swayed”. Boik, was murdered by Holmes three years ago. Holmes will be sentenc… And he said that no one should fault the jury, because “this is a matter of extreme justice”, and its members voted from their hearts. Police officers and victims cried and shook their heads in disbelief.

But she described the holdout as “genuine” and called the experience of being on the jury “life-changing”. Her 24-year-old daughter, Jessica Ghawi, was killed in the rampage. Judge Carlos Samour summoned everyone to court when they had reached a decision.
He also thanked the jury for their service during the three-month trial. They are now free to talk about the case, but he stressed that they are under no obligation to do so.

The prosecution argued in favor of the death penalty, pointing to the number of casualties and the documented planning behind the lethal 2012 attack.
Watching the survivors and families of Holmes’ victims react to the sentencing was “definitely painful”, said juror 17. The sentence will be announced at 7 p.m.
He was convicted last month of 24 counts of first-degree murder – two for each of the slain victims.
“We ended our deliberations when one absolutely would not move”, [a] juror, who only identified herself as “juror 17”, told reporters after the verdict Friday.
Jurors found the 27 year old’s crimes “especially heinous” in court on Friday (07Aug15), but declined to impose the death penalty.
Defense attorneys objected that the gruesome images taken immediately after the massacre would be prejudicial.
The judge, however, ruled the jurors could view it, but only once. He warned them not to let it prejudice their deliberations. Dozens of people were wounded, including some who are now paralyzed, walk with canes or live with fear and pain. Defendant James Holmes, top left in tan shirt, looks on. Holmes’ attorneys argued that their client is mentally ill and suffered a psychotic episode when he colored his hair orange-red like the villain The Joker, rigged his apartment with explosives, dressed in tactical gear, and sprayed bullets into the theater under a cloak of darkness and tear gas.
At first, Autobee supported the death sentence, but later found forgiveness.
