Cruise back with more stunts in ‘Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation’
But ultimately, the latest “Mission: Impossible” is about the action – like all others before it. Wearing contact lenses to protect his eyes from specks of debris, Cruise hangs on the Airbus, scrapes his knee on the asphalt in a breathtaking motorcycle chase and holds his breath for a full six minutes under water as he battles – and ultimately destroys – The Syndicate. Now, Brian De Palma’s first entry into this five film series seems like the obvious beginning of a franchise, but it didn’t back then.
According to rumors, Tom Cruise is about to pop the question for the fourth time! The atmosphere is dense and mercurial until it segues – sometimes neatly, sometimes not – into incredible set pieces. As far as physical appearances go, these women would indicate that Tom doesn’t have a “type”.
Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation is out in cinemas on Thursday 30th July. (Though we’d rather he take her name and be Mr. Tom Thomas.).
The 53-year old Hollywood star returns as Ethan Hunt in “Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation”, his fifth stint as the secret agent, serving up the usual action-packed and nail-biting scenes.
Twenty years later, Alec Baldwin‘s now playing Ethan Hunt’s stodgy old rival in the Central Intelligence Agency, while Tom Cruise is… Their goal is to take down a mysterious “syndicate” that is causing mayhem throughout the world.
And it is a solid foundation on which to build a film that repeatedly screws with its heroes, and screws them up good.
He tipped the hat to director and screen writer Christopher McQuarrie when asked how the improbable becomes believable in the film.
The dialogue-light opera house scene is a marvelous short film on its own. Even if it’s not hard to guess whose side she’ll ultimately wind up on, Ilsa’s ability to keep shrewd minds guessing about her allegiances is a high-wire act she sustains to very near the end, helped in no small measure by Ferguson, whose grown-up poise recalls that of some 1940s movie stars. Rogue Nation is very much a facsimile of 2011’s Ghost Protocol, a woah-look-Cruise-is-really-doing-that-stuff affair. While this is the most stylish scene, there are multiple action moments that top it later on. Renner is just as comfortable dealing with the bureaucratic hazards as the ones in the field, and he’s got great dry comic energy with Alec Baldwin. Ilsa Faust, Ferguson’s character, is cut from the same cloth as Paula Patton in the “kick your ass and make it look downright delightful” department, but there are some lovely nuances to the work she does.

Herein lies the core problem with this movie – a complete lack of romantic heat coming from Cruise. “Ethan Hunt vs. anti-IMF”. Tom setting the record straight on whether he will reprise his role as Maverick, “If I can figure it out, if all of us can figure it out, it’d be fun to do, I’d like to fly those jets again”. And for a film series that inherited one of the greatest television theme songs in history, it’s never been put to better use. Slightly less gadget-laden than Ghost Protocol, Rogue Nation comes up with some cleverly-wrought new scrapes for Hunt to find his way out of.
