Democratic Presidential Candidate Bernie Sanders visits Charleston

Sanders and his aides have acknowledged that he must increase his support among African-Americans, here and nationally, if he hopes to turn his surprising momentum into a serious challenge against Clinton. Just before the Seattle disruption, the Sanders campaign announced that they had hired Symone Sanders, a young Black woman who has been a supporter of #BlackLivesMatter and a longtime criminal justice advocate, to act as the campaign’s national press secretary.

But the famously socialist Sanders also knew the key to winning his three-way race for Congress was persuading Vermont Democrats that his hard-earned independence wouldn’t cripple him once elected. Sanders will introduce the bill when the Senate returns to session in September. “Hel-looooo, South Carolina!” she sang out, before giving a brief rundown of Sanders’s platform, including his calls for tackling economic inequality, reducing the prison population and making college education affordable for everyone.

Most respondents (65 percent), however, believe Clinton ultimately will be the Democratic presidential candidate.

It was, as the senator said, an agenda seemingly tailor-made for black voters – and numerous African Americans who attended said they liked what they heard.

Later in his speech on Saturday, Sanders contrasted himself with Sens.
