Double delight for Murray in Montreal
Djokovic will face Andy Murray in Sunday’s Rogers Cup final, pitting the world’s best players.
The Rogers Cup is the British number one’s fourth title of the year, his 6-4 4-6 6-3 victory coming in three hours.
With the two top seeds renewing their rivalry a drawn-out battle was expected and the players did not disappoint, Murray forcing a total of 19 break points on Djokovic‘s serve, but the resilient Serb found reserves to hang in there time after time before eventually succumbing. It would have been easy for me to let that one slip away. “Probably me and my tennis are the last thing on her mind just now, which is totally understandable”. It was Murray’s 11th Masters Title.
“Someone is smoking weed, I can smell it, I’m getting dizzy”, the World No. 1 reported to the chair umpire in an exchange picked up by television broadcast cameras.
With Murray 5-2 up and serving for the match, Djokovic saved three match points to bring the game to a deuce before Murray sealed the win to add to his titles at Munich, Madrid and Queen’s earlier this year. He stepped in, played some great shots.
Djokovic had said that had also noticed the smell during a doubles match with partner Janko Tipsarevic on Friday. Whereas just now I’m still nearly 6000 points behind Novak. Djokovic then put pressure on the Murray serve to the championship where he had 2 break points.
It is a stark contrast to past year , when Murray – still struggling for form after his 2013 back surgery – had to wait until October 31 to be sure of his spot at the O2 Arena, taking on a hectic schedule that saw him claim four titles in six weeks. Murray’s win is Djokovic’s loss.
“It’s good to get back close to the top”, said Murray, reported BBC Sport.
Britain’s number one was not about to be unsettled, however, as he came back with another break of his own in the sixth to tie proceedings at 3-3. Previously he recorded a victory over Djokovic at the Wimbledon final in 2013. He’s going to be with me pretty much every event I play between now and the end of the year.
“I need to make sure I recover well from this and get ready and hopefully play a good tournament in Cincinnati”.
