Elizabethtown Native Excited About Pope Francis’ U.S. Visit
Bishop Tobin will be among 300 bishops meeting with the Pope in Washington.
You are speaking to a Congress controlled by a Republican majority, many of them Catholics, who have already rejected your challenge.
Now, the 15-year-old sophomore is about to embark on a different kind of pilgrimage. They are at it again, shamelessly, on the eve of the USA visit by the widely-admired Pope Francis – who issued a ground-breaking Encyclical on the moral urgency of climate action back in June. Many members of Congress would prefer war with Iran instead. Catholics honor the apostle Peter by counting him as the first pope.
Some US bishops say the pope has not given them enough support against the Obama administration over abortion, contraception and gay marriage. Until then, climate change takes second place to abortion and same-sex marriage for many in the U.S. church leadership.
If we were to listen to Will and Heartland, then we would be condemning our children, grandchildren, and countless future generations to “irreversible dry-season rainfall reductions in several regions comparable to those of the “dust bowl” era and inexorable sea level rise”.
Atlanta Archbishop Wilton Gregory, along with the Most Rev. Luis Ramon and the Most Rev. David Talley, the two auxiliary bishops for the Archdiocese of Atlanta, will be in Washington for the pope’s visit. His encylical ties the issues together, declaring that the “idea of infinite or unlimited growth, which proves so attractive to economists, financiers and experts in technology…is based on the lie that there is an infinite supply of the earth’s goods, and this leads to the planet being squeezed dry at every limit”. He also says Francis, unlike his predecessor is not as fluent in English. They care about the world that God created.
“We’ll engage the candidates to pay attention, and they will”, he said. Following the Pope’s presentation there will be an opportunity for discussion. “If the Pope stuck to standard Christian theology, I would be the first in line”, wrote Rep. Gosar. “His meeting in May with Syrian and Iraqi refugees in Jordan, his condemnation of violence including the “repulsive and damnable” atrocities of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), Boko Haram’s brutality in Nigeria, and the “atrocious, inhuman and incomprehensible persecution” of Christians – which he has deemed genocide, has been heard around the world, and he has rightly urged the worldwide community to take further action in response to these calamities”.
Talley said people see something in Francis that inspires them.
But what it really is, what really draws me and millions of other Latinos to him, is his message of compassion, dignity, and justice for immigrants, migrants, and refugees.
Isakson called Francis “a down-to-earth individual”.
Bianca thinks Francis will address “how we should love each other, and how we should live in harmony, not just in the community but most especially in the home”.
Rhodes suggested the president will discuss the Paris talks with the pope during face-to-face talks September 23 at the White House.
Bianca, who has never been to the North, thinks the 14-hour-drive will be the hardest part of the trip, but doesn’t have a problem with the sleeping arrangements. In Pope Francis’ encyclical on the environment (written with the consultation of that great seminary the EPA and its embattled head Gina McCarthy), he condemned anyone skeptical of the link between human activity and climate change and adopted the false science being propagated by the Left.
