Fate of inter-Korean detente hangs on nuclear talks

Denuclearization, in particular, will be high on his agenda, amid US intelligence leaks suggesting North Korea has so far not been negotiating in good faith and is continuing to develop its nuclear facilities.

Kim Yong Chol welcomed Pompeo to North Korea, noting that it was his third visit to the country.

South Korean newspaper Chosun Ilbo said that Trump had even raised the subject of the epithet in their meeting in Singapore.

The talks lasted almost three hours and it was uncertain whether Pompeo would meet Kim Jong Un.

The North Korean leader is believed to have spent more than ten years at schools in and around Bern, and requested his favourite fried rösti potatoes to be served at a recent summit with South Korean President Moon Jae-in.

One U.S. official said the regime has stopped nuclear and missile tests but “there’s no evidence they are decreasing stockpiles, or that they have stopped their production”.

He will be meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un among other officials at the government guest house, where he will stay overnight for the first time.

Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said last month that the United Nations command in South Korea would initially take charge of the transfer of remains – when they occur – and would then turn them over to the custody of the USA military.

A group of 50 male and female players from the South arrived in the North’s capital on Tuesday for four rounds of friendlies on Wednesday and Thursday – agreed at the inter-Korea summit held in April. “What Pompeo can do is deliver something and receive what they say and carry it home for study”, said Charles Kartman, who served as the special envoy for peace talks with North Korea in the late 1990s and early 2000s and was the former director of the Korea Peninsula Energy Development Organization.

Coincidentally, Trump invoked Elton John during his Thursday night rally in Montana, although completely unrelated to “Rocket Man” Kim Jong Un.

After initial troubles getting components in, the system is now complete with six launchers and a powerful X-band radar that constitute one THAAD battery.
