Father tells of daughter’s ordeal in Oregon
The sheriff in Roseburg, Oregon, where a gunman killed 9 students at Umpqua Community College earlier this week, said that the shooter killed himself during a confrontation with police at the scene of the campus assault. Thursday, October 1, 2015, after a deadly shooting. Two minutes later, there was a report of “suspect down”, according to the timeline.
Hanlin said during a press conference Saturday afternoon that he was authorized to release the cause of Harper-Mercer’s death determined by Oregon’s medical examiner.
“I know words can not bring families back”.
Stacy Boylan, the father of one of those victims, 18-year-old Anastasia Boylan, said that his daughter told him as much. “I’ve put green porch lights up too”, she said. Father and son had a good relationship, he said. Like Texas, Arkansas and Mississippi, public college and universities in Oregon can limit who carries concealed handguns and where they can carry them.
Mercer said he has never held a gun.
“I had no idea he had any guns. What do you want a gun for?” He declined to comment on any mental problems his son may have suffered.
Families of victims of the Oregon community college shooting rampage and at least one survivor have attended tearful church services in Roseburg.
Teacher Lawrence Levine, 67 of Glide; 33-year-old Jason Johnson of Winston; 20-year-old Treven Anspach from Sutherlin; Rebecka Carnes, 18, and Sarena Moore, 44, both of Myrtle Creek.
Ages of Umpqua’s students vary widely.
The gunman stormed into his college classroom, shot the professor in the head and then ordered students to stand up and state their religion. He says other countries have “angry young men” but they don’t generally have access to an arsenal of weapons when they “snap”. The bullet clipped one lung and lodged in a kidney, which doctors removed. The gunman thought she was already dead. Fitzgerald remains in critical condition.
The paper said agents from the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives were en route to Roseburg, a city of about 20,000 people a few 260 miles (418 km) south of Portland.
FBI investigators say the gunman brought six legally-purchased weapons to the small college and was wearing a flak jacket. An additional amount of ammunition was also recovered at the apartment. Federal investigators are trying to determine what led Harper-Mercer to the shootings.
The official did not reveal the contents of the document but described it as an effort to leave a message for law enforcement.
It has emerged that Harper-Mercer also failed basic training for the US Army in 2008.

Armed with multiple weapons, Chris Harper-Mercer, 26, walked into a classroom at the college Thursday and opened fire, killing several and wounding others. “And I hope they can get through this”.
Investigators have found no indication the shooter was linked with any organized groups. “And eventually, this will only serve to inspire a future shooter”.
Harper-Mercer was enrolled in the class, but officials have not disclosed a possible motive for the killings. “But today is not the day”, she said.
