Floyd Mayweather stripped of welterweight title he won against Manny Pacquiao
The World Boxing Organization took away his welterweight title because Floyd refused to obey the WBO’s strict regulations.
For Mr. Mayweather to pick up the paper and read that another promotional company has announced that it is staging a bout for the same WBO title that Mr. Mayweather won in the ring, now holds and has not relinquished, was extremely disappointing for him and his team.
The organization relented and gave Mayweather a deadline to meet its criteria for a champion, including making a payment of $200,000 from his Pacquiao purse and giving up his WBC and WBA light-middleweight titles. So, in the absence of the 200 grand, the WBO referred the case to its championship committee and made the call to pull the belt.
The rules also say that a boxer has only 10 days to decide which weight-class title he wants to retain.
American Timothy Bradley, who defeated countryman Jessie Vargas for the WBO interim welterweight belt on June 27, is now expected to be formally elevated to full champion status by the WBO.
Mayweather, who finished ahead on all three scorecards of what proved to be the top-grossing prize fight of all-time, had until last Friday afternoon to advise the WBO of his position. He earned more than $220 million for the fight.
“The WBO has the utmost respect for Floyd Mayweather Jr. and all that he has accomplished during his storied career”.
In an interview with jr-stripped-wbo-welterweight-title” target=”_blank”>ESPN, Mayweather Promotions CEO Leonard Ellerbe seemed displeased with the ruling.
After all that, Floyd Mayweather might have got nothing from the “fight of the century”… except hundreds of millions of dollars. “Floyd will decide what, or if any, actions he will take”.
But two months after boxing’s biggest ever pay-per-view extravaganza, Mayweather still hadn’t done so with any of his belts – until the WBO stepped in.
“Other fighters need a chance”, he said following the fight.
