Former Gov. Bush tackles policy, rivals in Tallahassee speech
Miles Rapoport, president of Common Cause, a Washington-based group that advocates for tougher lobbying restrictions, praised Bush’s proposals, saying a six-year ban would be “at the top end of what we would have wished or hoped for”.
Former Governor Jeb Bush retuned to Tallahassee Monday, claiming bragging rights as a reformer and promising to bring the same skills to “Mount Washington”.
According to Reuters, “Bush characterized himself as a more moderate type of Republican who still has conservative principles, promising meaningful immigration reform, speaking some fluent Spanish, pledging to “disrupt” Washington, reminding voters of his wife’s Mexican origins and criticizing potential adversary Hillary Clinton“.
“That would be – and then go pursue your whatever your desires are, but showing up for work it’s what’s required of every American”, Bush added.
Someone needs to tell him that when kids rebel against their parents and their boring jobs, they usually aren’t simultaneously interviewing for the same gig.
The firm would also hire former Florida House Speaker John Thrasher, a close Bush ally.
“The overspending, the overreaching, the arrogance, and the sheer incompetence in that city – these problems have been with us so long that they are sometimes accepted as facts of life”, Bush plans to say in a speech Monday in Tallahassee. Before he ran for president he constantly urged other Republicans to offer up alternatives to Democratic-backed ideas like President Barack Obama’s health care overhaul instead of just opposing them. By doing so, he has also attempted to frame himself as a Washington outsider, a fine line to walk for the son and brother of US presidents. But a president should never accept them, and I will not. Marco Rubio, and Kentucky Sen. Bush separately approved a plan for corporate lobbyists to help his administration pass a bill exempting the state’s pension investments from Florida’s open records laws.
“The Pentagon’s acquisition system is so swamped with regulations, only a handful of giant defense companies can compete for big contracts”, Bush said, endorsing reforms from Senator John McCain and Representative Mac Thornberry, the Republican chairmen of the Armed Services committees in their respective chambers.
Bush was able to cut taxes consistently while he was governor because the state’s economy tracked upward, part of which was due to a supercharged real estate market that collapsed after he left office. Vin Weber, a former congressman turned lobbyist, said he has exchanged emails with Bush and spoken at Bush events. The reserves cited by Bush also include money that the state won in a landmark settlement reached with the nation’s tobacco companies prior to his election. Here’s what I believe, and here’s what I know: “For all of us, the coming years can be and will be the best time ever to be alive in this country of ours, and I’m ready for the challenge”. He said his goal was to eliminate 10 percent of the federal workforce within five years.
