Germany expects 10000 refugees today
The region said people were arriving faster than accommodation could be found for them, with the German railway operator asked to provide a train for refugees to sleep in. I would like to express my thanks to all DB employees and volunteers at stations throughout Germany.
The train they were travelling on pulled in to the station to a rapturous applause from locals who had gathered on the platform holding balloons and banners reading “Welcome to Frankfurt”.
The new arrivals were medically screened, fed, watered and counted out of sight of other passengers before being bused to hastily repurposed destinations around the city, including trade fair grounds and a railway logistics center. The trains are taking refugees to a variety of cities including Munich, Frankfurt, Dortmund, Braunschweig, Hamburg, Saalfeld and Eisenhüttenstadt.
“We have more than 1,000 volunteers who have signed up on lists and online and are ready to help”, said one of them, Colin Turner.
A similar total is expected to arrive in Munich later on Sunday. He said Europe’s so-called Dublin rules, which require people to apply for asylum in the first European Union (EU) country they enter, had not been suspended. Austrian onlookers cheered the migrants’ arrival, with many shouting “Welcome!” in both German and Arabic.
Austria said late on Sunday it planned to phase out emergency measures that have allowed refugees to stream into Austria and Germany from Hungary since Saturday morning, raising the prospect that the influx might slow. “We have helped more than 12,000 people in an acute situation”, Faymann said.
Prime Minister Viktor Orban told reporters that Hungary collected and drove the migrants to the border only because they were posing a public menace, particularly by snarling traffic and rail lines west of Budapest when they mounted a series of surprise breakouts from police-controlled positions Friday and headed for Austria in large groups on foot.
Germany’s newspaper Die Welt quoted Munich police spokesman Thomas Baumann as saying Sunday that the surging number of new arrivals had forced Bavarian authorities to redirect migrant flows to Berlin, Baden-Wuerttemberg and North Rhine-Westphalia.
MUNICH – Austria and Germany threw open their borders on Saturday to thousands of exhausted migrants from the east, bused to the frontier by a right-wing Hungarian government that had tried to stop them, but was overwhelmed by the sheer numbers of people.
