Good News, Publishers! Mobile Ad Blockers Won’t Actually Block Much Revenue
Now, software to block ads on these gadgets has arrived -and the harsh realities of the practice are causing second thoughts. Ad-dependent publishers nearly universally dread it, while vocal ad blockers applaud it as the inevitable hastening to a flawed, dying business model.
No, I don’t mean ad-blockers specifically. Whether the sites will suck more or suck less because of content blockers remains to be seen. So publishers and advertisers increasingly resort to desperate measures.
Anti-adblock interests have dire warnings about the economic impact of ad-blocking: more than $40 billion in lost revenue globally by next year, if we believe their numbers. Several ad blockers surged straight to the top of the charts after iOS 9 launched, fueling concerns that Google could start missing out on mobile ad revenues from iOS devices. People who block ads tend to consume, on average, more content than those who don’t.
iOS 9 wants to ease your battery life woes with a new low-power mode that you can activate from the Battery menu inside Settings (it switches off a few background processes and can add up to an hour of life).
A shift to blocking ads could have a silver lining, according to Enderle.
“The ad network I’m a part of, The Deck, only serves ads that are fast to load and don’t track you“, Gruber said. “Why block that?” That’s equivalent to 14% of its 2014 revenue. Ad blockers could render all ads obsolete, regardless of their perceived quality.
Mobile ads may have done poorly because Millennials are on their phones so much and don’t like for their surfing to be interrupted.
Arment expressed concern that Peace treated all ads the same in an approach that was too heavy-handed in a world where such decisions are not black-and-white.
Of course, the value of that annoying ad is different for every publisher: Not all audiences are created equal and advertisers are willing to pay much more to get in front of some than they are of others. Arment did not reply to any e-mail and call asking for comment.
The argument that this is all about bad vs good ads is also clearly not an issue any more. Whitelists are a list of approved ads that could get past the blocker.
With the arrival of iOS 9, ad blockers will be allowed to be easily inserted into Safari with the aim of giving a smoother user experience for internet browsing. In fact, looking through the Google Play Store, I see all kinds of familiar names.
A more common response has been to talk about “simplification” (making better ads) and “conversation” (persuading readers to accept ads).
A new front in the war against online advertising has opened up with the official release of Apple’s latest mobile operating system, iOS 9. The feature once turned on, will stop automatic downloads.
These include full or partial content paywalls, or subscription- or advertising-supported apps for smartphones and tablets. The Siri virtual assistant suggests frequently used contacts and apps and nearby businesses, taking into account whether it’s evening or lunch time.
“At present, we haven’t discovered any loss of user information or assets as a result of this [breach], though the WeChat team will continue to monitor and do tests”, Tencent said according to the report by the Wall Street Journal.
Bluetooth can be switched off by opening the Control Center (swiping up from the bottom of the screen) or going to Settings Bluetooth.
Other than direct advertising, respondents also gave an insight into how they would be attracted to a brand with free content being named as the most effective way.
