Gowdy gets support as possible majority leader
Support for Gowdy to succeed McCarthy remains minimal, which first emerged after a Republican conference gathering on Tuesday morning, with the endorsement of New York representative Lee Zeldin as well. While I think he would have been a great majority leader, I absolutely respect this decision.
The race is otherwise a face-off between Scalise and Price, after Washington Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers, the House Republican Conference chairwoman, said Monday she will not compete for the majority leader job.
Also active on twitter was Rep. Mia Love, R-Utah, who typed, “Join me in drafting Trey Gowdy for Majority Leader”. “One hundred percent, I am staying on the Benghazi committee”. The scramble for the majority leader post started Friday after House Speaker John Boehner announced he will resign next month.
Gowdy “made it clear that he is OUT of any consideration for any leadership position”, Rep. Mick Mulvaney, R-S.C., tweeted Tuesday night.
“Trey will stand up and speak out for the conservative principles and conservative policies that will capture the imagination of hardworking Americans and unleash the power of American exceptionalism”, Love posted on the social network.
“The Constitution says the president has a duty to faithfully execute the law, so for the health of the republic, it would be nice to debate what that phrase means,”Gowdy argued in defense of his farcical proposal”.
“It doesn’t keep them from asking me to do it”, he said Wednesday. “At the end of his term, yes”, he said. “Don’t know how I can be any more definitive”. Fleming claimed that Gowdy himself told him about the pending retirement. According to Congressional sources, Gowdy is not just uninterested in taking on greater responsibility in Congress. He’s uninterested in remaining there for very long at all, beyond the 2016 elections, a sentiment apparently revealed as his office tried to dispel rumors of his desire for a greater role.
Gowdy is chairing a special House committee investigation on the 2012 terrorist attack in Benghazi, Libya.
I would rather see him in the Next Administration as the Attorney General or as second Secretary of State.
