‘Here we go again’ _ Americans’ lament after Oregon shooting
The tracker’s definition of a mass shooting differs slightly from the official Federal Bureau of Investigation definition, which says that an event qualifies as a mass shooting if four or more people are killed.
Hours after deadly Oregon college shooting, another mass shooting incident happened in Florida, leaving three killed and one wounded, said the Tracker.
This was the 45th incident of mass shootings at a school in the U.S. this year.
Of the mass shootings, 84 incidents can be categorized as spree murders, including the shooting Thursday at Umpqua Community College in Oregon that left at least 13 people dead and more injured.
The gunman – who has been named in reports as Chris Harper Mercer (26) – attacked students inside a classroom.
The week from July 12 to 18 saw the most mass shootings – a total of 18, five of which happened on July 15.
A visibly angry Mr Obama said the issue of gun control should be politicised in America, and called on Americans to hold politicians accountable for acting on the issue.
“Somehow this has become routine”. “This is something we should politicize”.
There are also allegations that a thread on online bulletin board 4chan may have been posted by the shooter when he was planning his attack.
Obama did not mention the National Rifle Association by name, but his remarks hit flat on the powerful organization which holds sway in Washington politics. But the broader definition is nonetheless a useful one, because it captures many high-profile instances of violence-such as the Lafayette theater shootings-that don’t meet the FBI’s criteria.
We’ve gone no more than eight days without one of these incidents this year.
