Doug Welty, a spokesman for the Office of Inspector General at the State Department, said he couldn’t comment on the existence of a probe into Abedin.
It appeared the judge did not directly order Clinton, Mills or Abedin to make the certifications because they are not officially parties to the lawsuit, which names the State Department as the sole defendant.
Her lawyers told the government there was no effort at the time to calculate the amount of time she worked during those periods.
“Huma Abedin is widely known as one of the hardest-working people in all of Washington during the almost two decades she was in public service”, said Abedin’s attorney Karen Dunn.
Grassley’s letter to Kerry alleges that Abedin had exchanged at least 7,300 emails that “involved” Band, but didn’t expand on how many of those were between Abedin and Band.
“Yet the committee has received allegations… that she claimed to be, and in fact was, on leave on numerous occasions”, Grassley wrote. “But every piece of this letter has issues with accuracy and we have no reason to believe this is an exception”.
