How Obama Could Salvage Iran Deal
Caruso reported from New York.
Congress has to decide on the nuclear agreement in or before September 17. Iran has always denied that it is developing nuclear weapons and has often highlighted that countries should not cross the red line of its nuclear program during the negotiations.
Republicans are virtually universally opposed at this level.
“Once I hear a senator, a congressman rise up and say, “We should always get a greater deal” – That isn’t going to occur”, Kerry stated.
“It’s not going to happen overnight”, Kerry said in a public question-and-answer session at Reuters news service headquarters in New York.
“I can tell you that I know Chuck pretty well”.
“The Europeans, the Russians, the Chinese, they’re going to say, ‘we stuck with the Americans, we agreed with the Americans, we hammered out this agreement, I guess their president can’t make foreign policy.’ That’s a very bad signal to send in a quickly moving and oftentimes unsafe world“. “That’s where we gotta get 13 Democrats“, he said.
Well, as the group undergoes its anti-nuclear deal campaign, Lieberman is certainly a safe bet to lead it. There’s no chance he’s having a change of heart with Israel, best buds John McCain and Lindsey Graham, and now even Chuck Schumer all against it.
The top American diplomat also challenged those who have criticized the length of the deal’s restrictions on Iranian enrichment of material that can be used in nuclear warheads and other elements of its program.
The Moniz webcast will follow a similar appearance on August 5 by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who stridently opposes the deal.
Bartlett said in an interview Tuesday evening that he “couldn’t believe” when the deal with Iran was announced.
Echoing Kerry’s case, 36 retired generals and admirals released an open letter Tuesday urging Congress to back the deal.
Samore said he still has “reservations” about the deal, but if diplomacy is the tool at hand, and not military force, this is probably the best temporary outcome. The worldwide arms embargo against Iran may also be lifted and allow Russian Federation and China to provide Iran with military technology, including ballistic missiles (that could deliver a nuclear bomb to the U.S.). The non-profit, non-partisan advocacy group was founded in 2008 with the goal of preventing Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons. “The choice is that stark”.
The White House said it was up to Senate Democrats to decide their leader, but dropped heavy hints about what they thought of Schumer’s actions.
“If the United States were to behave that way, not only would we have lost them with respect to the sanctions, but we will lose their support if we have to use military action”, Kerry said. He is the No. three senator and needs to grow to be Senate Democratic chief after the 2016 election.
Asked on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” if Schumer still has her vote, she replied, “Of course”.
“I really do think there are solid grounds for reasonable people to come to different conclusions on this agreement”, he said describing his decision.
“This is a vote of conscience”.
