Iwobi accepts Super Eagles’ invitation
Super Eagles Coach Sunday Oliseh has added Arsenal youngster, Alex Iwobi to the list of players invited for the October friendly matches against DR Congo and Cameroon.
The 19-year-old, who is the captain of the Gunners’ Under-21 side has represented England at the U-16, U-17 and U-18 levels, but has since shown his interest in playing for Nigeria at the senior level.
But Iwobi, who is the nephew of former Nigeria star Jay-Jay Okocha, has committed to the country of his birth.
All invited players are expected to arrive in Belgium on October 5.
Iwobi has previously featured for Arsenal in pre-season, where he starred in Arsenal’s Emirates Cup victory and scored in the drubbing of French giants Lyon.
Nigeria head coach Sunday Oliseh has revealed that Manchester City prodigy, Kelechi Iheanacho “will get his time” to play for the Super Eagles.
It is also belived that the nation’s football authority stepped up the pressure to get him to play for Nigeria, after another youth global, Jordon Ibe, turned down the opportunity to star for Nigeria, opting for England, instead.
The victor of the preliminary round between Swaziland and Djibouti will host the Super Eagles on November 9 in a 2018 Federation Internationale de Football Association World Cup first round qualifier, with the Eagles hosting the return leg in Nigeria eight days later.
