Jeremy Corbyn unveils new direction Labour Party
The Labour Party conference in Brighton will consider an emergency motion opposing the extension of the RAF’s campaign against IS into Syria without “clear and unambiguous” authorisation from the UN.
Called for a review into Labour rules to see whether a rule could be introduced to ensure there is gender balance in the Labour leadership team. “They are aspirational. They want to feel good about life”, he said.
“There is going to be no rudeness from me”. “You don’t win elections on a mantra of misery”, he said.
“Wow. I was absolutely blown away”, said Elaine Tiffin, a former nurse from Brighton who joined the Labour Party the day after Labour’s election defeat in May.
“And especially the misogynistic abuse online”. Treat people with respect.
He denounced Blair’s 2003 invasion of Iraq and reaffirmed his own support for getting rid of Britain’s nuclear weapons.
In an interview with the Guardian’s editor-in-chief, Katharine Viner, on the Labour conference fringe, McDonnell said: “There are a few big ticket issues where there are a few principled disagreements”. Having learned that lesson that is exactly what we are doing now: being an anti-austerity party straightforwardly and at the same time link that to the development of an economic credibility based upon sound economic advice.
“Lets not pre-empt whatever decision we may or may not have to take”.
The Labour leader told Sky News: “I was elected with over 250,000 votes from party members and supporters”.
Corbyn particularly singled out Saudi Arabia for criticism.
“How dare these people talk about security for families and people in Britain“.
“And they want to gerrymander electoral boundaries across the country”.
Mr Corbyn dismissed as “absurd” David Cameron’s charge that he was a threat to national security, and said he acknowledged the need for the British armed forces to “keep us safe”.
Mr Corbyn has called for a United Nations security council resolution and a fresh diplomatic push to end the violence in the Middle East state, which has been torn apart by a bloody civil war and the rise of the jihadi group.
Corbyn had a net approval rating of minus 3pc in an Ipsos Mori poll last week – the worst on record for any new leader of the two main parties.
But his predecessor has already warned that Labour risks being laughed at if it tries to persuade voters it has “magical solutions”.
Speaking moments after Mr Corbyn finished his flagship conference speech, Mr Rotheram described how he looks forward to working with the left-wing party leader.
“No whistles, no bells or flashing lights, just straightforward fresh politics about truth, compassion, decency and justice. I think the public don’t really know him yet”, she said.
