Judge rules nuns sale of convent to Katy Perry was ‘invalid’
The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Los Angeles says it’s agreed to sell the multimillion-dollar property to Katheryn Hudson, better known as pop superstar Katy Perry, for $10 million in cash and alternative property valued at $4.5 million. The judge indicated the lawsuit could drag on for another two years.
“You’re not selling to Katy Perry anytime soon”, the judge told lawyers for the archbishop. Chalfant, however, explains that, “This is a problem for the sisters because they don’t trust the archdiocese”. The two sisters frequently shook their heads, and gasped and muttered in disdain as the archbishop’s attorney Michael Hennigan assured Chalfant that the nuns would be cared for financially if the judge ordered Hollister removed. This sale was declared invalid by a superior court judge on Thursday, but Perry’s competing effort is still held up until the legal procedures are complete. The “Roar” songstress now has to battle the Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary and restauranteur Dana Hollister over rent for the coveted piece of land, a hilltop, villa-style convent in Los Feliz that offers views of downtown L.A. and the San Gabriel Mountains.
It’s believed the “Hot n Cold” singer wants to move into the eight-acre property with her mother and grandmother.
Perry’s involvement as well as infighting between the nuns and archbishop packed the courtroom Thursday with journalists, concerned residents, Hollister and two of the nuns. During the hearing, the nuns’ attorney Bernard Resser told the court that the takeover was a “coup”.
“It’s really a attractive, old Hollywood estate”, said Adrian Glick Kudler, senior editor of the real estate blog Curbed LA.
But the nuns who lived there agreed to sell it to a businesswoman instead.
Yet, the filings contain details that could be fodder for screenwriters who toil in the entertainment mecca that sprawls far below the convent. “I never thought I’d see the day when Katy Perry is in bed with the archbishop”.
Both Hollister and Perry are expected to make offers to rent the property after experts help the court to figure out what a fair amount should be.
