Kevin McCarthy announces bid for House speaker after Boehner’s exit
Last Friday, House Speaker John Boehner walked up to a podium in the Capitol dome singing.
“I am running to be your Speaker because I know that the People’s House works best when the leadership you elect listens to Members and respects the legislative process”, wrote McCarthy, who has a reputation for being a good listener, in his announcement letter.
The House is also expected to pass the continuing resolution, with conservatives opting not to push the Planned Parenthood issue this week, instead pressing the women’s health group in hearings.
“When you look at the poll numbers of Hilary Clinton – they’ve dropped”.
Burress also stated he feels Boehner had gotten “bored with the job” as speaker and complements him for “recognizing the fact that it’s time to move on”.
McCarthy said immigration begins with securing the southern US border and fixing lapses in the country’s visa program. He said, “This is going to be a generational change”. On this aspect, McCarthy told Eyewitness News he’s just turned 50, and he’s decades younger than many lawmakers in Washington.
“The Republican House is in a sad state”, bemoaned Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid of Nevada on the floor of the senate Monday. “And I’m concerned about what we hear”.
McCarthy officially made a case for himself on Monday, writing a letter to talk about his leadership style.
But the Bakersfield native says he has goals for taking up that job.
McCarthy was asked the question directly while standing at Boehner’s side Tuesday morning. “I view it as a team captain”. “The Bible says beware of false prophets, and there are people out there spreading noise about how much can get done”.
Rep. John Boehner’s time in Congress is down to a number of weeks.
While McCarthy is known for cordial relationships with conservatives in the party, he could face a few opposition as he reaches for the gavel. He really played a big role back in 2010 in building this majority, so maybe he thinks, on a personal level, that he can connect with them more.
McCarthy said he supports a “bottom-up” approach to leading, where Republicans first put forward their policies and plans, use committees to do the groundwork, and then let that effort result in winning a vote on a policy. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, a Republican presidential candidate, Boehner said, “You can pick out a lot of names”.
We wouldn’t argue over Boehner’s conservative principles. “I may philosophically disagree with them sometimes”. That won’t happen overnight, and it won’t be easy. “But that’s my mission”, he said.
