Latest loss ends Dolphins’ season with 3 games still to go
While the Giants’ win placed them back in contention for first while effectively ending their three-game losing streak, they can not afford to lose any more games this season if they plan on making their playoff dreams a reality.
“A little double move”, Manning said of the play. His message to the players was that they’ve played well enough to win before so there was no reason why they couldn’t do so again now that there is no room for error. You just don’t get the feeling he will look at himself as bigger than the game, the way some self-absorbed players often become deeper into their careers.
Odell Beckham scored the last two touchdowns of the game, securing the win for the Giants.
When asked about his future beyond this season Campbell said, “I’ll be honest with you, I just want to win”.
There are professional athletes and coaches who are relatively nonchalant and indifferent when losses begin to mount, but today it was clear that the losses are beginning to take their toll on Campbell. They’ve taken all the shots from the outside and they’ve continued to work hard, believing they can win and tonight that’s what it took.
With 5:07 remaining in the third quarter and the Giants trailing the Miami Dolphins 24-17 on Monday Night Football, Beckham broke toward the front corner of the end zone and appeared to be rapidly running out of space.
Beckham ran a slant-and-go that drew the safety toward the first act of the route, then drove up the field and caught the pass while flashing his sprinter’s speed on the play.
“We have to stay on track, we have three games left and we have to win all three”, said Manning.
When he returned to the game, Beckham contributed back-to-back touchdown catches, the first of which came in the third quarter on a 6-yard pass that brought his team back from a 24-17 deficit to tie the game. Completing 87 percent of his passes, Manning delivered unquestionably his most impressive performance of the season. Jennings also picked up 47 of his yards after contact, and added 21 yards as a receiver out of the backfield. The game was a microcosm of the Giants’ season – with their warts exposed for all to see, yet with opportunities still presenting themselves for success. Shane Vereen managed zero yards on his one carry and Orleans Darkwa’s touches continue to be limited because of his role on special teams. He left that game after just one game, but returned a few series later. The offensive line was doing a great job of just getting moving. Landry was again overshadowed by his former LSU teammate Odell Beckham Jr., who caught seven passes for 166 yards and two touchdowns. With the stakes getting higher each week, the creativity of defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo will certainly be tested. Miller led the way for the Dolphins as he gashed the NY defense for 89 yards and two touchdowns, only on 12 carries. Danny Aiken made his debut as the Giants’ long snapper, replacing Zak DeOssie (wrist), who is out for the season…. But that plan is going to get a lot more complicated against the Panthers with Josh Norman in coverage.
Landry is Miami’s top target and finished the night with 11 catches for 99 yards, but could not match the show put on by Beckham.
For example, on 3rd-and-11, Tannehill escaped the Giants pass rush. This is a problem that defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo has to fix if the Giants will make the playoffs.
