Leeds United Vs Sheffield Wednesday
Manager turned pundit Ian Holloway has predicted a draw in the Yorkshire derby between Leeds United and Sheffield Wednesday. No one at that stage could have foreseen what would happen after the break though as Matt Smith, on at half time for Tom Lees, received his marching orders just two minutes into the second period and from there it was a stroll for Wednesday as Leeds defended like theyd never seen a ball before.
In the midweek’s league fixture, Leeds United once again failed to collect all three points as two late goals helped Bristol City claim their first point of the season on Wednesday evening.
Both sides have made slow starts to the season with Leeds drawing all three of their games to date and exiting the Capital One Cup at the hands of Doncaster. That gloss was glittering towards the end as two goals in the last ten minutes from young substitute Caolan Lavery capped a remarkable day at Hillsborough. It will be his first Championship game of the season so far, having previously taking control of Watford’s 2-2 draw at Everton and Swansea City’s 2-0 win against Newcastle in the top flight.
Lees said: “I think definitely here at Sheffield, there’s definitely a sense of optimism with a new start and new beginnings”.
“Watching them against Luton, they could have won the game in 15 or 20 minutes”.
Just as they did against Brentford on Saturday, the Robins built up an early head of steam and Joe Bryan and Jonathan Kodjia combined to prise open the visiting defence once more, only to be frustrated by an offside flag. They’ll do well this season. “They’ll come at us like a house on fire and it’s very important that we’re mentally strong in the beginning”.
Well, without standing on ceremony Matias produced an incredible strike on just his fourth appearance which could well be considered a Puskas Award contender come the end of the season.
He added: “I’m pretty happy with going into the Bristol game being unbeaten”.
Leeds keeper Marco Silvestri was forced into his first save as Jonathan Kodjia’s got a shot in from inside the area and from the resulting corner Stuart Dallas cleared off the line from Aden Flint’s header. “It’s a lot different now with different players and staff and not that familiar any more”. “I know I can work hard for the team and do my best, but ultimately I want to score goals as well”.
