Lib Dems Will Block Key Tory Pledge: Farron
The chair of the Labour Friends of Israel (LFI) group, Joan Ryan MP, reportedly issued an invitation to Corbyn to address a reception to be held at the party’s annual conference next week, against the backdrop of concern from the Jewish community in the United Kingdom over Corbyn election.
Mr Benn’s remarks, in an interview with The Independent, reflect fears that leading figures on the right, such as Chuka Umunna and Rachel Reeves, have decided to “sit out” Mr Corbyn’s leadership and wait for the party to move back in their direction.
“I realise there are some who feel that pinning our colours to the centre ground risks sounding a little insipid, a neither-on-the-one-hand-nor-on-the-other kind of party”, he said.
TIM FARRON botched his bid to woo Labour voters and MPs to the Lib Dems this weekend by describing some of Thatcher’s most divisive acts as “undoubtedly necessary”.
“He contacted me and said he wouldn’t be able to come- but only because he would be presenting reading awards to children at Archway Library”.
Farron will be making his first keynote conference speech since he was elected as leader in July. “I think the rich should be paying for the recession”.
He also faced criticism over the appointment of controversial left-winger John McDonnell as shadow finance minister as well as his failure to put women in the top shadow cabinet posts.
“I’m disappointed that people on the far-left of the party are trying to get rid of moderate MPs like myself”.
Sources close to Mr Corbyn last night denied that the claims were anything to do with the new Labour leader.
“How can this country have food banks when we are just about to spend £100 billion on a replacement system that we will never use?” she told activists in Bournemouth.
Now that things have settled down somewhat after the explosive Labour leadership election, many freelancers will be starting to wonder what the success of Jeremy Corbyn, previously regarded by many as an outsider in terms of his political views and prospects, could mean for their self-employed careers.
Asked whether he would support an extension of the air campaign against IS – also known as Isis – Mr Farron said the West had to be “very cautious”.
But he predicted the party could make a “dramatic” return by taking advantage of Labour’s shift to the left under Jeremy Corbyn – although he would not rule out forming a government with the opposition leader.
Whether they like it or not Jeremy Corbyn was victorious simply because he offered people in this country a clear alternative – that’s why he pulled people towards him like a magnet.
“Similar doom-laden predictions were made by Lib Dems who said it would be a disaster if Britain didn’t join the euro, they were wrong then and they are wrong now”.
