Local News Station Uses Holocaust Symbol for Yom Kippur Story
Such was the case for WGN when a highly insulting image was used during a report on Yom Kippur on Tuesday night, and the network has since issued a formal apology. That symbol reflects a badge that Jewish persons were forced to wear in Nazi concentration camps and elsewhere in Germany during World War II.
Easterly and Lyons says they were embarrassed and were investigating how the symbol was used.
“It was after 10:40pm when the offensive image was shown on WGN-TV”, reported Chicagoland Radio and Media, “but the lateness of it didn’t stop phone calls from flooding in and social media slams against the station for its bad mistake”. Observant Jews fasted from Tuesday night through Wednesday, and many spend the day in synagogue.
The highest holy day of the Hebrew calendar begins tonight as followers of the faith observe Yom Kippur.
Choosing an appropriate image to relate news stories is a major part of television journalism. “Ignorance is not an excuse“.
While some viewers were unsatisfied with the apology, others blamed the education system for failing to teach “young people” about the Holocaust and its symbols.
‘Please know we are reviewing our in house policies and changes have already been made to make sure a hurtful oversight like this never happens again. “I would like to send my greetings to the Hebrew community, to our Jewish brothers, for whom today is a sacred day, Yom Kippur“, Pope Francis said. On Yom Kippur, atoning and repenting lead to you being cleansed of your sins completely, so you start fresh the next day. “We deeply apologize for that error”.
In the Jewish tradition, at the conclusion of Yom Kippur, which is an hour past sundown Wednesday, each person’s fate for the coming year is sealed. It is an experience that allows us to collectively work for and achieve the greater good.
