Man seriously injured in Ferguson shooting
St. Louis County Police Chief Jon Belmar said the man opened fire at officers, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
Harris has since been charged with 10 offences, all of which are felonies.
A day of peaceful remembrance marking the anniversary of a black teen’s killing by police in the US city of Ferguson came to a violent end Sunday as gunfire left at least one protester injured.
Brown’s father was among the group of people who spoke to the protestors before white doves were released in Brown’s memory, according to St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Those in custody included scholar and civil rights activist Cornel West. About 250 people were on West Florissant Street after the march at around 9:30 p.m. The crowd thinned considerably hours after the shooting. “There is a small group of people out there that are intent on making sure we don’t have peace that prevails”, he said during the press conference.
U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch condemned what she said was “violence against the community, including police officers” in Ferguson over the weekend. Belmar says the suspect spotted a van carrying four plainclothes officers and fired into the windshield. Once again, the man shot at the officers and all four returned fire.
The person wounded in the police shooting was identified as 18-year-old Tyrone Harris Jr. Witnesses explained to the father that his son was not armed and was simply in “the wrong place at the wrong time”.
“It’s all a bunch of lies…”
The younger Harris does not have a listed attorney.
The suspect had a semi-automatic 9mm gun that was stolen last year from Cape Girardeau, Missouri, police said.
The suspect allegedly turned around and shot at the officers as they got out of the vehicles. All four detectives who shot him were placed on administrative leave, which is customary. STL Today also reported that they were not wearing body cameras.
Police and protesters faced off in a tense standoff not far from where Brown was shot one year earlier.
Belmar called the people exchanging gunfire “criminals” not “protesters”.
Authorities said they were trying to restore order. Police have described his condition as critical. Two men told police they were targeted in a drive-by shooting near a memorial to Brown. He is now being held on a $250,000 cash-only bond. The gunfire struck the police vehicle several times.
