Over the weekend Donald Trump said that Senator John McCain was not a war hero because he was captured.
“If you listen the comments in total, he’s not critical of John McCain the war hero, he’s critical of his Senate record”, co-host Steve Doocy said.
“I think the point here is that there’s so many men and some women who served and sacrificed and happened to be held prisoner”, McCainsaid in the interview.
Trump has been under fire from the large GOP field – with the notable exception of Ted Cruz – after saying on Saturday that McCain is “not a war hero” and is, in fact, a “loser”.
In an opinion piece published Monday in USA Today, Trump asserted McCain had abandoned the nation’s veterans and made America less secure through his votes in Congress. …
“Donald Trump’s comments about prisoners of war are reprehensible”, McCain said.
“I put that all behind me”, McCain said. “The next sentence was, ‘He’s a war hero.’ I said that, but they never want to play it and you don’t want to play it”, Trump said.
McCain was a Navy pilot during the Vietnam War and was captured after his plane was shot down. McCain- any veteran that served in the service- especially a POW, really is a great hero. I have hundreds of town hall meetings all over Arizona and I’m called insane by the peoplewho come there.
Trump later acknowledged that McCain’s sacrifice was heroic. “Some people don’t get it and I don’t think they’ll be in office much longer”. For me to look back in anger at anyone is nonproductive and our country was divided and nearly unprecedented fashion during the Vietnam War. “So I’ve worked ever since to try to heal those wounds”.
“I have absolutely no problem with that”, Trump said. “I say he and everybody like him is an American hero”, Graham said.
Donald Trump’s campaign for the 2016 GOP presidential nomination has sparked yet another firestorm with his recent comments about Senator John McCain.
“I believe if this continues to become more contentious between Trump and the Republican Party, that we have to start to consider the possibility of a third party movement”, the CBS News contributor explained.
In the op-ed, the former Texas governor also criticized Trump for not knowing anything about the Mexican border and for being divisive on race.
