Montano tried to escape out the back door of the theater, and as he emerged with ax in hand and started toward officers, five of them opened fire, police said. The 911 call came through around 1:13 p.m. As the call was being made, people inside the theater hurried and told officers who happened to be nearby responding to an automobile accident. He died in a shootout with police.
Aaron said Vincente David Montano started his attack by pepper-spraying two women who were sitting in the theater.
Anderson says investigators also have not yet found the gun that the attacker used to shoot at police.
The Murfreesboro report says Pruett brought with her a copy of a Tennessee identification card for Montano that listed an address for Nashville Rescue Mission, a homeless shelter.
One man was injured by the hatchet.
Police originally said that the suspect was 51 years old, but later revealed that their information was wrong and he was in fact 29.

A shaken witness who was reportedly struck with pepper spray along with his daughter thanked police for saving their lives. SWAT, believing he had a pistol, fired an unspecified number of rounds during several engagements, Aaron said.
A backpack that had been strapped to the man’s chest was later detonated to eliminate any threat.
Just two days before the attack, Montano’s mother, Denise Pruett, contacted police and said Montano was missing.
The first police officer to enter the theater, Officer Jonathan Frith, said Montano pointed a pistol at him and pulled the trigger, so Frith fired one round before backing out of the theater. The suspect left by the back door and was then shot and killed by officers.

According to reports, Montano arrived at the theater 20-25 minutes before the film was scheduled to begin. Nashville Fire Department spokesman Brian Haas later said the gunman also had pepper spray on him. “I applaud the Metro Police Department for its great work to apprehend the suspect, keep our citizens and visitors safe, and prevent a tragedy”, he said.
Frith then backed out of the theater and worked to keep Montano contained inside as SWAT officers responded. Montano had previously checked in at the facility in May, but also was not recorded as staying the night.
But when he fired at officers, he shot pellets.
“He was shot, fatally wounded, and has been pronounced deceased at the scene”, said Nashville police spokesman Don Aaron. He did not have further details.

But it does not specify why Texas authorities were concerned he was missing or believed he was in Tennessee.
