Nancy Lee Grahn Apologizes After Criticizing Viola Davis’ Emmy Acceptance Speech
The actress told Entertainment Weekly that making history is “bittersweet”.
The reaction to Davis’ emotional and inspirational Emmy acceptance speech had the Internet buzzing. “She’s made millions. It is unfair comparison”. The awards, last night, were about much more than spiky statuettes. “They just make you too black”.
According to an article in Variety, Davis’ speech got: “a standing ovation from the crowd in Microsoft Theater on Sunday“.
But it turned out the generous actress was rooting for Viola, who stars in ABC’s How To Get Away With Murder, all along.
Davis’ speech almost broke the Internet. The disparity is incredible. She credited people, writers, who work to change what society perceives. It added that it is also this year that multiple women of color, Davis and Empire’s Henson, had been nominated for the lead actress in a drama series category. But the numbers prove it needs more Latino actors in those roles as well.
But Davis’ win was not without controversy.
“Emmys not venue 4 racial opportunity,” she wrote in a tweet that was later deleted. “ALL women belittled”.
We often complain about the representation of our women on TV, and even if some don’t agree with the roles, their presence is hard to ignore.
Do you think she was out of line? Brilliant as she is. But Grahn said Davis has never been discriminated against.
The 57-year-old actress took to Twitter on September 20 saying she didn’t mean to hurt anyone in her mission to “advocate” for women with or without color. Please read and learn about the struggles of black people, BLACK WOMEN for centuries!
Perhaps the most poignant reaction to the win came from Davis herself. I’m very happy about a lot of things that have happened in my career. I wish I could get her roles. I want my daughter to grow up knowing that she can be anything she wants to be, that she can accomplish whatever she puts her mind to.
And she agreed wholeheartedly when Ellen referred to Viola’s moving acceptance speech in which the 50-year-old talked about the lack of opportunities for women of colour and thanked industryites, including show creator Shonda Rimes, for doing something to address the situation.
