Navy fighter jet crashes near Lemoore, California
Kings County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed a military jet has crashed in Lemoore near a Naval air station.
The aircraft went down in a field near Highway 198 and Avenue 27 alignment, about two miles west of the base entrance, according to the local law enforcement agency. The cause of the crash is under investigation.
Navy spokesman Marc Calero says the pilot is in good condition.
Passer-by Leonard Hinkle told the newspaper he saw fire crews spraying the wreckage with what seemed to be foam.
Lemoore officials reported that the plane crashed around 3:55 p.m. PT, in an unoccupied field near the base.
Navy officials said it crashed south of the “Operations Side” of the base, but the California Highway Patrol reports that the plane crashed a couple of miles west of the base.
Another F/A-18 Super Hornet crashed in May after taking off from the aircraft carrier the USS Theodore Roosevelt, which was in the Persian Gulf conducting strike operations against the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria.
One pilot landed his jet at the Fallon base about 15 minutes after the collision. “The pilot is safe”.
