New surveillance video shows Ferguson suspect pointing gun at police
The clip shows a person police identify as Harris grabbing a handgun from his waistband and running toward a parking lot, police say in response to other shots being fired during the protests.
JASON ROSENBAUM, BYLINE: It’s a cloudless Tuesday night on West Florissant Avenue in Ferguson and a line of policemen in SWAT gear just pushed a large group of protesters off the street and onto the sidewalk.
St. Louis County Executive Steve Stenger declared a state of emergency that authorized county Police Chief Jon Belmar to take control of police emergency management in and around Ferguson.
Harris is charged with ten additional felonies including 1st degree assault on law enforcement officers.
Four civilians carrying automatic rifles and sidearms patrolled a riot-torn street in Ferguson, Missouri, early Tuesday, saying they were there to protect a media organisation but drawing swift criticism from police and protesters alike.

McGuire said that police officers and state troopers went to an area of West Florissant Avenue – the epicenter for protests in Ferguson last year and this month – because some protesters were standing in the road. As he watched Tuesday’s protests while leaning against his auto, he says police often treat him with disrespect and suspicion.
“If the goal is to achieve any kind of working relationship with the protesters, the St. Louis County Police Department needs to rethink its strategy”, Clark said.
Police had been watching Harris during the protest out of concern that he was armed, the chief said. Officers returned fire, wounding the shooter.
Monday’s police presence was far more conspicuous compared with Sunday night.
The crowd marched, chanted and at times confronted police. As his preschool age son Kahlil peers out the vehicle window, Wilkes wonders aloud if he’ll ever see the change.
Protester Rayna Martin, 17, who lives in the neighborhood where Brown was shot, said the violence within her community has been made worse by the actions of police.
“With your support, we properly honored your friend and my son’s memory”, he said. About 150 people were arrested during demonstrations Monday and early Tuesday morning.
The organization says its members are all former military, police or first responders who pledge to “defend the Constitution against all enemies, foreign and domestic”, according to the group’s website.
