North Atlantic Treaty Organisation Service Member Killed in Kabul Attack
Military jets were heard flying over the centre of Kabul shortly after the Camp Integrity explosions.
It is relatively unusual for U.S. troops to be killed or injured in Afghanistan, as Afghan police and soldiers are now doing most of the fighting.
The names and nationalities of the foreign military and civilian contractors killed were not released.
“We strongly condemn the series of insurgent attacks in Kabul yesterday (which) … demonstrate again the insurgency’s complete disregard for the lives of innocent Afghans”, Mr Toner said.
“The helicopters went on for hours… medevacing people out”, a U.S. contractor at a camp nearby said.
The United States urged the Taliban on Saturday to shun violence and join the process as insurgent attacks kill 51 people in Kabul.
“The suicide attack… resulted in martyrdom of 21 civilians and wounding of 10 others”.
The attacks on Friday, which included a truck bomb in a heavily populated civilian area and a suicide attack on a police academy, were some of the most serious in months and the first in Kabul since the Taleban named a new leader last month.
In that attack, the Taliban said a person dressed in police uniform mingled with cadets returning from their weekend break, AP reported.
The assaults undermined claims by security services and the government that the capital was immune from devastating attacks.
The Afghan intelligence agency announced over a week ago that Mullah Mohammad Omar, the reclusive one-eyed founder and leader of the Taliban, had been dead for more than two years.
After the Taliban confirmed Mullah Omar’s dying, a management wrestle engulfed the higher echelons of the group, which is holding conferences within the Pakistani metropolis of Quetta in an effort to resolve the disaster.
“The Afghan people are resilient, but the suffering caused by (these attacks) in terms of civilian deaths, injuries, and the loss of family members, is extreme, irreversible and unjustifiable”, the UN mission in Afghanistan said in a statement.
However, the number of women casualties rose by 23% and children by 13%.
“People should perhaps reassess the line which has been put about that he was leading the movement towards peace“, Michael Semple, a professor at the Institute for the Study of Conflict Transformation and Social Justice at Queens University Belfast, told CNN.
North Atlantic Treaty Organisation referred to as a halt in 2014 to its fight mission in Afghanistan, substituted since January by Operation Resolute Support, which has some 4,000 troopers engaged in help and coaching duties. “Actions speak louder than words”.
However, in the audio message on Saturday, Mullah Mansour dismissed peace talks as “propaganda campaigns by the enemy”, and called for unity among the Taliban. Security forces say they have thwarted a number of attempts to bring large caches of explosives into the capital.
