Oregon college gunman Christopher Harper-Mercer ‘left manifesto’ complaining
Authorities say the gunman who killed nine people at an Oregon community college killed himself as officers arrived.
Taking an emotional pause at the news conference, she also addressed “our nine” – a reference to the eight students and school instructor killed in the shooting rampage.
“The medical examiner has determined the cause of death of the shooter to be suicide”, Douglas County Sheriff John Hanlin told reporters on Saturday.
“I needed to be here”, said another student, Madysen Sanchez.
Harper-Mercer, who moved to the United States from Britain as a child, carried out the massacre at Umpqua Community College (UCC) in Oregon last Thursday.
He said his daughter remembers the gunman, Chris Harper-Mercer, from two days before the attack, when they were fellow students on the first day of writing class: “She said, ‘Daddy, he talked a lot”.
Mercer’s British-born father Ian, who lives in Torrance, California, said he was devastated by the killings and didn’t understand how his son managed to amass his arsenal.
He apparently demanded to know his victims’ religious beliefs before opening fire on the campus.

According to his daughter, Anspach used his body to cover her after he was shot and it was only because she was covered in his blood that she survived.
Pastor Scroggins says his daughter and his town will not be victims and encourages Christians in America not to lose faith.

College President Rita Cavin didn’t identify the injured student who came to campus.
The official is familiar with the investigation but commented on condition of anonymity.
The official said the document was left at the scene of the shooting but wouldn’t specify how authorities obtained it.

There have been conflicting accounts of Harper-Mercer’s words inside the classroom, and what he may have meant by them.
She attended as a mature student alongside her 18-year-old daughter Shannon, who survived the attack unharmed, The Sun reported.
“You live on in us”, she said. “Whatever it is, let the police determine what they find”, he said. Mercer burst into classes and started shooting, killing at least 10 people and wounding 20 others. In a statement released by authorities, his family said they were “shocked and deeply saddened” by the slayings.
Oregon’s top federal prosecutor said the shooter used a handgun when he opened fire.
Over the past several years, Harper-Mercer’s mother reportedly posted on websites about the difficulties of having a son with Asperger’s syndrome, a form of autism.
Survivors had previously suggested that Mercer had left a message for police.
