Oregon shooting: Locals reflect on the horrors of the massacre

The gunman also wounded seven people in the rampage and died in an exchange of gunfire with police.

They were among the nine people killed Thursday when a gunman stormed the campus of Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, Oregon.

Carmen Nesnick, Harper-Mercer’s stepsister, said he was born in the United Kingdom and travelled to the United States as a young boy.

We talked to Hazard Community and Technical College to learn what changed after they had a similar incident almost three years ago. “No one should ever feel the pain that we are feeling”.

Celinez Nunez, assistant special agent of the US Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, said all the weapons had been purchased legally. Law enforcement sources said that four guns, including an AR-style rifle were found at the scene.

The officials said he lamented the fact that he had no girlfriend.

Obama has blamed the NRA for that failure, which he has called one of the biggest frustrations of his time in office. Law enforcement officers say he also carried spare ammunition.

But it’s hard to imagine that the Oregon shooting will provide any movement in Congress given that legislation failed – months after the December 2012 massacre at an elementary school in Newton Connecticut that killed 26 students and educators.

The family of Rebecka Carnes, who went by “Becka”, said on Facebook that the teenager had just started a new job and began classes this week to eventually become a dental hygienist.

“And eventually, this will only serve to inspire future shooters”.

Few details about the shooter’s motive have emerged, but authorities said Harper-Mercer was a student at the school and enrolled in the class where the shooting took place. At one point, circulating a petition to get the landlord to deal with a cockroach problem, a neighbor remembers her saying, “My son is dealing with a few mental issues, and the roaches are really irritating him”.

Investigators are pursuing blog posts by someone with an email address associated with Harper-Mercer.

The Los Angeles Times reports that authorities have obtained a few of Mercer’s writings that show him to be “a hate-filled individual with anti-government and conspiracy tendencies” who “was supportive of the white supremacist agenda and opposed organized religion”. He did not name the victim but said she was the great-granddaughter of his first cousin.

There didn’t seem to be many recent connections on the social media sites linked to Mercer, with his MySpace page just showing two friends.

The posts were left under the user name “lithium_love”.

But investigators believe this was a case of domestic terrorism with no ties to any worldwide group.
