Over 100 dead in India floods
In West Bengal, some 42 people have been killed in the last week from floods, while some 250,000 homes have been destroyed, state disaster management minister Javed Ahmad Khan said.
Heavy monsoon rains have killed greater than 100 individuals in India up to now week and compelled tens of hundreds of individuals to take shelter in state-run aid camps, India’s Residence Ministry stated Sunday.
Mary said rescuers have arrived at the village in Chandel district after blocked roads hampered efforts to reach the site, some 80 kilometres from the state capital Imphal.
Photos showed a bridge washed away by floodwaters in Manipur, while TV stations aired footage of a house collapsing and families sleeping in evacuation centres.
“The situation is going to worsen”.
Exacerbated by Cyclone Komen which struck the east coast on Friday, the rainfall has made major rivers overflow, inundating villages in parts of West Bengal, Odisha and Manipur states.
At least five people have died in the eastern state of Orissa, where more than 400,000 people are affected by the floods.
Another 28 flood-related deaths have been reported from northern Rajasthan state. Around 200,000 people have been shifted to relief camps in districts such as Burdwan, Hoogly, Howrah and North 24 Parganas in West Bengal, and plastic sheets and dry food rations have been dispatched to survivors, one official said.
In the western state of Gujarat the death toll from days of flooding after heavy rain has reached 53, as a result of drowning, electrocution and other incidents. But officials said waters were now receding, allowing power and communications to be restored. India has monsoon rains from June to September, which are vital for agriculture.
