Rhode, whose time in Toronto started with being selected by her teammates as the Team United States of America flag bearer for the Opening Ceremony, took to the skeet field on Saturday to defend her gold medal from the 2011 Pan Ams in Guadalajara, Mexico. After a slow start, the United States topped all countries 32 medals, including a dozen gold. Canada went 6-1 to win the tournament that is full of baseball powerhouses.
Francis, the 11-year big-league veteran who signed a minor-league deal with the Blue Jays this year and has pitched in eight games for Toronto, weathered an early storm from the US and kept Canada in it until their offence was able to break through.
