Overholt wins Pan Am gold in 400-metre free

A unusual global rule came into play during Canada’s gold medal win against the U.S.in baseball on Sunday at the Pan Am Games.

A little over a week into the Pan American Games, there has been plenty of reason to be proud and vocal.

Canada’s rising star in the first week was 19-year-old gymnast Ellie Black, who has won three golds – and five overall – and shown that Canada can excel at more than just at ice hockey. Women’s rugby made its Pan Am debut, and Canada made history in commanding fashion, crushing its opposition 285-19 through six games, and demolishing the US 55-7 in the final.

Rhode, whose time in Toronto started with being selected by her teammates as the Team United States of America flag bearer for the Opening Ceremony, took to the skeet field on Saturday to defend her gold medal from the 2011 Pan Ams in Guadalajara, Mexico. After a slow start, the United States topped all countries 32 medals, including a dozen gold. Canada went 6-1 to win the tournament that is full of baseball powerhouses.

Francis, the 11-year big-league veteran who signed a minor-league deal with the Blue Jays this year and has pitched in eight games for Toronto, weathered an early storm from the US and kept Canada in it until their offence was able to break through.

After Team U.S. led 3-0 early, the game remained tied at four at the conclusion of regulation. But Canada responded quickly thanks to a Rene Tosoni two-out, three-run home run in the bottom of the third.

The semifinals are Sunday, and the medal games are scheduled for Monday before the men’s tournament gets underway Tuesday. It is the first time women’s baseball has been contested at an global sporting event.
