Police Issue Arrest Warrant for Suspect in Bangkok Bombing
Two days after the attack, which authorities have called the worst in Thai history, the open-air Erawan Shrine reopened to the public.
Police chief Somyot Poompanmoung said authorities do not know if the suspect seen in the video was still in the country, whether he was Thai or a foreigner and were wondering if he wore a disguise to mask his identity.
“He didn’t do it alone for sure”, he said, referring to the main suspect. “It’s a network”, he added.
Police spokesman Lt Gen Prawut Thawornsiri said he is confident that some Thais were involved.
Bangkok’s Southern Criminal Court later issued an arrest warrant for the unidentified “foreign” man, for charges including conspiracy to commit pre-mediated murder, as well as charges related to the possession of unauthorized explosives and weapons.
He faces six charges including conspiring to commit premeditated murder and conspiring to commit a bombing that resulted in death and severe injuries.
National police spokesman Lt Gen Prawut Thavornsiri said the two men were “definitely” no longer suspects.
Police have extended a 1 million baht award for any information leading to the man’s arrest.
One of the men was wearing a red shirt and the other was in white, and they were seen leaving the area shortly before the man in yellow also leaves.
Since a deadly blast in Bangkok on Monday, Thai authorities have been wrapped up in the aftermath of the event, as they investigate the case and work with families of the victims.
Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha appealed to the man in the video to come forward, warning that the suspect “might get killed to stop him from talking”.
Meanwhile, of 123 people reportedly injured in the blast, 68 remained warded in hospitals, with 12 said to be in critical conditions.
Checks at airports and other exit points found that no one matching the description of the main suspect had left the country since the attack, he said. She says the last human remains were only cleared from the site earlier on Wednesday.
The bombing has claimed the lives of at least 13 foreigners – from China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore. The pair said they are tour guides.
Sunny Burns, an Australian model and actor, was horrified when he saw his photographs being compared on social media with a man who carried out a deadly bomb blast in Bangkok’s commercial district. Police have not ruled out a link. “It’s a network”, said Somyot.
