Police video shows Ferguson suspect just before being shot
St Louis County Executive Steve Stenger declared a state of emergency that authorised county police chief Jon Belmar to take control of police emergency management in and around Ferguson.
Oath Keepers members previously showed up in Ferguson in November after a grand jury declined to indict Wilson in Brown’s death, saying they stationed themselves along several downtown rooftops to protect businesses from rioters and looters. The gathering was quiet, as people mingled along the side of the road.
The protesters chanted, beat drums and carried signs.
On Monday, reporters Wesley Lowery of the Washington Post and Ryan Reilly of the Huffington Post learned they had been charged with trespassing and interfering with a police officer in a separate incident while reporting on the unrest that followed the police shooting of Michael Brown Jr.
Events marking the anniversary of Brown’s death had been peaceful until Sunday night, when the gunfire rang out and Tyrone Harris Jr. was shot.
“My son was running to the police to ask for help and he was shot”, Mr Harris Sr said.
Police outnumbered demonstrators in Ferguson on Tuesday night, signalling the protests around the anniversary of an unarmed African-American teenager’s death at the hands of a white police officer could be starting to fade.
In St. Louis on Monday, police also arrested 57 people during protests outside the Thomas F. Eagleton Courthouse.
Amid the lower-level county declaration this week, tensions between protesters and police eased late Tuesday in the city.
Police on Tuesday released a video of that shooting that they said showed the teen, Tyrone Harris, drawing a pistol from his trousers. Prosecutors announced 10 charges against him – five counts of armed criminal action, four counts of first-degree assault on a law enforcement officer and a firearms charge. Fifty-seven more people were arrested for breaking through barricades that sealed off a federal court in St. Louis, which is near Ferguson.
Even when armed members of the Oath Keepers, a far-right anti-government activist group whose presence Belmar has called “both unnecessary and inflammatory”, appeared, there was little conflict.
The Associated Press left a message with John Karriman, a representative of the group in Missouri.
McGuire added that the police were not aware of any footage showing Harris firing the weapon or of the officer involved. Police helicopters flew low over the crowds and shined searchlights at the protesters.
“We maintained order, there was no looting, no shooting and no one was injured”, he said.
Police and protesters clashed intermittently during demonstrations Monday night.
Later during afternoon rush hour, more than 60 others were arrested for blocking lanes of Interstate 70 in St. Louis County, a few miles west of Ferguson.
