President Obama vents frustration over Oregon college shooting
A grim President Barack Obama says the US has “become numb” to mass shootings like Thursday’s incident in Oregon, where 20-year-old gunman killed at least 9 people at Umpqua Community College.
Yesterday a gunman killed nine people in a community college in Oregon. In accordance with Title 17 U.S.C. Section 107, the material on this site is distributed without profitto those who have expressed a prior interest in receiving the included information for research and educational purposes. As per the sources, he had four firearms, including a rifle.
Almost 11m guns were manufactured in the U.S. in 2013, with a total of just below 16m entering circulation after legal imports are factored in, according to the US Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. He was speaking at a university in South Carolina, where he was first asked about his stance on gun rights, without reference to the school killings.
Epidemiological studies have found that people with serious mental illnesses such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder are somewhat more likely to be violent than healthy people.
Sen. Jeff Merkley of Oregon said one of his cousins was killed at the school.
News4Jax spoke to people with different viewpoints, but two things they can agree on is that the violence has to stop, and Americans aren’t doing enough to prevent shootings like this. Neither factor correlates precisely with gun deaths, and even where correlations can be shown, it’s hard to sort out whether shootings are common because people are buying guns, or the other way around. They’re betting people’s lives on the hunch that these factors-not the supply of weapons-account for gun fatalities.
Part of the problem is, perhaps, because of how cemented the Second Amendment is in American heritage. Background checks, other common-sense steps that would maybe save a few lives couldn’t even get a full vote.
Anastasia Boylan, 18, was hit in the back by a bullet that traveled down her spine.
Wanda Mintz says her nephew went through seven hours of surgery and is expected to survive.
Stacy Boylan said his daughter told him the man “gave somebody a box, somebody who lived, and said, ‘You gotta deliver this.’ Somebody has a box”. He died in a shootout with police.
Despite mass shootings happening at a rate of nearly once a day in the USA, it seems that protecting gun rights concerns more Americans than efforts to bump up gun control measures.
Once again, we have witnessed a mass shooting by an individual who certainly had hatred in his heart and may have been motivated by anti-Christian or anti-religion views.
During an evening press conference, Douglas County Sheriff John Hanlin said, “Let me be very clear: I will not name the shooter”. “I’m refusing to state his name….” This won’t be information coming from me; it will be coming from you.
Other law enforcement agents have identified the shooter as Chris Harper Mercer.
