Protest held in Mobile against Planned Parenthood

Charmaine Yoest, President and CEO of Americans United for Life, posted photos on Twitter of demonstrations around the country showing crowds of protesters wrapped around city blocks in front of Planned Parenthood facilities. “There is a quote that says silence in the face of evil is evil itself and so I just decided I can’t be silent and I think that’s how a lot of these people felt today”.

The rationale that some politicians are using to defund Planned Parenthood is largely focused on investigations into alleged illegal for-profit fetal tissue sales by Planned Parenthood in some states. “They take misinformation and pump it out to the public and now they’re standing outside of clinics and education offices to try to really confuse the public as to what is really happening”, Jacobson said.

Planned Parenthood has come under increasing scrutiny recently due to secretly recorded videos about its role in supplying aborted fetal tissue for medical research.

In previous years, Indiana and Arizona have battled against Medicaid funding for Planned Parenthood in court. “It’s a human decency thing”, said protester Kelsey Kurtinitis. Speakers and attendees at Saturday’s St. Paul rally said they were unhappy that the group receives federal and state funding. Planned Parenthood is the nation’s largest provider of abortions, but says abortions account for a small part of its array of services.

When Congress returns to Washington in a few weeks, however, I have no doubt that these extreme attacks on Planned Parenthood will resume, this time with the added threat of a government shutdown. However, it was abortion that stoked emotions at Saturday’s rally.

Among those protesting outside the clinic, there were a handful holding signs in support of Planned Parenthood. “They are engaged in a fraud, and other claims they’ve made have been discredited and disproven”, Ferrero said.
