Rain-hit Bangladesh-S.Africa Test ends in draw
The world number one Test bowler had said that at this stage of his career he wants to save his energy for major tournaments, rather than wasting his “last few balls” in Bangladesh.
But, with the rain not relenting on Friday officials were forced to call off the day’s play around 1.30pm local time.
Only 221 overs were bowled in the match as the fourth and fifth days were washed out without a ball being bowled and around 50 overs were lost due to rain on the previous two days at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium. “So there’s no use getting frustrated about it”, he said.
It was Bangladesh’s first draw against South Africa after eight defeats in as many Test matches.
Their combined effort enabled the Proteas to take 6 for 147 on the day to wrap up the Bangladesh first innings. We can only take positives from the match.
South Africa were 61 for no loss in their second innings, 17 runs behind the hosts, on the third day. Dean Elgar and Stiaan van Zyl, both unbeaten at stumps on Day Three, had good outings with the bat in the first innings as well.
Bangladesh’s pace debutant Mustafizur Rahman was judged man of the match for his 4-37, including three wickets in an over in the first innings.
The second Test begins on Thursday in Dhaka.
