Schumer Improves Response to Race ‘Blind Spot’ — Vulture
Schumer’s response to said “blind spot” suddenly being on the media’s radar was – despite her usual tendency to transcend comedic norms – a pretty typical defense. “Amy Schumer’s jokes are racist”. “I will joke about things you like and I will joke about things you aren’t comfortable with”, Schumer wrote in a lengthy response on Twitter.
Recently, Monica Heisey for The Guardian newspaper called her out for having a “shockingly large blind spot to race” and just two days ago The Washington Post published an opinion piece saying “only white America was laughing” at Schumer’s jokes. But the Washington Post op-ed takes this argument a step further, claiming the comedian’s jokes are not merely offensive, but risky, and could be to blame for accused Charleston shooter Dylann Roof’s “worldview”. I still do sometimes.
“Once I realized I had more eyes and ears on me and had an influence I stopped telling jokes like that onstage”, she writes. It is a joke and it is amusing.
Amy Schumer is so awesome that she knows when to admit she was wrong!
“Her jokes target a primarily white audience, often at the expense of people of color”, Anne Thériault writes in a critique of the comedian for The Daily Dot.
“I am evolving as an artist”, she added.
She went on to say that she’s “taking responsibility” and hopes she hasn’t “hurt anyone”. “Thanks again for asking”. “I apologize if I did”. Though Schumer is known for her staunchly feminist Comedy Central series, she has stumbled when it comes to jokes about race.
