John McCain, a prisoner of war in Vietnam who was the Republican Party’s 2008 presidential nominee, has suggested Trump is appealing to “the crazies”.
“I am not a fan John McCain because he has done so little for our veterans, and he should know better than anybody what the veterans need, especially in regards to the (Department of Veterans Affairs)”, Trump said in the statement. “I like people that weren’t captured, okay?”
The 78-year-old decorated aviator was shot down, captured, tortured and spent five years in prison camp during the Vietnam war.
Celebrity billionaire Donald Trump on Sunday refused to back down or apologize for mocking Arizona Sen.
This weekend, though, he went off the proverbial “deep end”, wasting any legitimacy his campaign had on a quip about, of all people, John McCain. He answered, “No, I don’t think”.
He then tried to deflect his attack by saying his gripe was that as a senator, McCain was not doing enough for veterans. Also amusing/frightening: “While his competitors may be busy working through thick stacks of books on world affairs to prove their qualifications, Mr. Trump says he has little use for such”. Ted Cruz and former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, while agreeing McCain is a genuine hero, sidestepped when asked if they condemned Trump’s remarks.
I guess Trump has a different idea of what makes a hero. “That Donald Trump has the money that Ross Perot had, he has an even greater degree of commitment to this race, he doesn’t play by the rules that any other candidate plays”. He said his fellow candidates were so quick to condemn him because he’s been rising in the polls in recent weeks after generating yet another controversy after he called Mexican immigrants rapists and criminals.
“Well I’m not a fan of John McCain, he’s done a awful job for the vets”, Trump said. He insisted in a telephone interview with anchor Matt Lauer that he had said “four times” that he respected those captured in war.
Many GOP candidates were slow in their response to Trump’s comments as they searched for a way to reach out to Hispanics without alienating traditional GOP voters. “It’s not just absurd”.
Trump had said McCain isn’t a real hero, simply based on his time in captivity. “And I believe perhaps he is a war hero, but right now, he said some very bad things about a lot of people“. I thought the idea was to capture them.
“Trump is toast”, Peter Wehner, a former White House aide to George W. Bush, wrote in Commentary.
