Senegal outwit Poland to claim Africa’s first win at World Cup
After top-scoring in European qualification with 16 goals, Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski will be Poland’s key man in their opening tie against Senegal.
Niang shrugged Lukasz Piszczek off the ball on the left touchline and launched an attack, which led to Gueye’s shot from 20 yards out taking a massive deflection off Cionek to beat Wojciech Szczesny. But an instant replay from another angle shows the referee told him to re-enter just before the ill-fated back pass was played.
Poland and Colombia were both thought to be group favourites but now suddenly find themselves in the bottom half of their group, also thanks to Japan’s win over the South Americans earlier in the day.
Senegal took up a leading role in Group H with a resounding win over Poland. Robert Lewandowski’s side have been unbeaten against African sides in their last three games and would like to keep that record intact against Senegal. This team was fast, this team was physical and in Aliou Cisse they had a coach who understands African football and what the World Cup means to Senegal more than anyone else. Even at two down, Adam Nawałka’s side lacked any urgency to get back into the contest. Kamil Glik was on the bench. Poland returned for the first time since 2006.

Midway through the first half of Poland and Senegal’s meeting, McCoist produced one of his driest lines yet after noting Poland’s Jakub Blaszczykowski has the longest name in the tournament. Subs: Konate 5, N’Doye 5, Kouyate 5.
A corner from Niang then reached Salif Sane, but he smashed his free header into the ground and over the bar. But from a decent position, the Senegal forward drags his shot well, well wide.
The west Africans doubled their lead on the 60-minute mark when the experienced Juventus goalkeeper had a moment to forget. But out came Thiago Cionek’s right leg, deflecting the ball into the net, with the former Arsenal keeper completely wrong-footed. What is Krychowiak doing?!
A poor back pass from inside the Senegal half by Grzegorz Krychowiak had substitute centre-back Jan Bednarek hesitate for a split second.
Senegal then extended its lead to 2-0 on a weird goal from M’Baye Niang (60′) in which he came onto the field and got behind the defense after he was waved back on by the official. They will have to play much better than this if they are to make it out of the group. It’s gone to VAR, was it offside? No!
