Seven suspected Australian militants stopped from leaving country
Seven young Australian men detained from Sydney airport in two separate occasions, over suspicions they wanted to join militant Islamist groups, news agency Reuters reported.
Seven men carrying large sums of cash have been stopped from boarding flights out of Australia allegedly to join terrorists in the Middle East.
Abbott said the allure of Islamic State and similar groups remained strong. That group comprised five men, the newspaper reported, citing an unnamed intelligence source.
They were intercepted the next day, attempting to board another flight to leave the country.
At the point when squeezed about the occurrence by a correspondent, Mr Dutton showed more subtle elements may be accessible later on Thursday.
“That follows a number of people who have been off-loaded by the counter-terrorism unit officers, in particular in Sydney and Melbourne, over a period of time”, Mr Dutton said.
Border Protection Minister Peter Dutton told reporters in Canberra on Thursday there was “an incident” but would not go into specifics.
“It wouldn’t be appropriate for us to respond and I don’t think, as a responsible journalist, you would expect us to say anything beyond that”, he said.
“Just recently they did their job in this particularly important and significant way”, Mr Abbott told reporters.
Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott did not give details about the gender and age of the detained, but told the Australian that the incident had occurred earlier this month.
According to the Australian government, over 100 Australians are fighting alongside terrorist organizations, including ISIS, in the Middle East, while another 150 people are believed to be supporting militant groups from within the country.
Bilardi, Elomar and Sharrouf are all believed to be dead – all killed while involved in terrorist activites.
