SNP considering second Scottish independence referendum
Now Joshua Brown, a campaigner with the Socialist Workers Party, says the SNP now has many more supporters than before and should create “winnable” conditions if they seek to triumph in another independence referendum.
It comes after First Minister Nicola Sturgeon yesterday said the SNP will set out the timescale for a possible second referendum on independence in its manifesto for next year’s Holyrood election.
“The people of Scotland voted to remain part of the United Kingdom last year”, a Downing Street spokesperson said. Another poll conducted in the same week showed a similar result.
It is perhaps that kind of thinking that led the former boss of the Yes Scotland campaign for independence, Blair Jenkins, to suggest a second referendum in 2021.
The SNP’s position is expected to be revealed following the SNP’s annual conference in Aberdeen next month. Sturgeon said a referendum on independence could be held “in five years or 10 years”.
She said: “It’s a big privilege – it’s a very special award and I’m delighted”.
“It doesn’t work and will never work… we need to get it right… otherwise the consequences will be fatal”.
“So to have this recognition is something that means a great deal to me”.
Scotland has already voted in two devolution referendums.
Scottish Conservative leader Ruth Davidson said: “Nicola Sturgeon has now made it clear that she wants to take Scotland back to another referendum, with all the uncertainty and division that entails”.
Opposition parties have repeatedly blamed Sturgeon for failing to deliver on her “once-in-a-generation” referendum promise. We have frozen the council tax, protected free Higher Education, scrapped prescription charges, protected Free Personal Care, maintained the concessionary travel scheme, increased Scotland’s health budget to record levels, put over 1000 more police on our streets, and protected those hardest hit by unfair Tory welfare cuts.
The ruling party will set out the timescale for such a move in its manifesto ahead of the Scottish Parliament election in 2016.
Development Coordinator for the Equality Network Scott Cuthbertson, said: “We are very excited to be hosting the Equality Network’s inaugural Scottish LGBTI Awards”.
